The Special Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center

"RECIPIENT Tye Band"

On Date: Thursday Aug. 10th 2006 at The Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, NE
The Parents of Fallen Police Officer Tye Pratt who was shot and killed in Omaha gave their second award ,a $350.00 cash award to one graduate of this 165th Basic Training session. This award come from the Ofc. Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund which is made possible be the donations of The Tye Band Company Endowment. This is made possible be the support of all the caring Citizens, Businesses throughout Nebraska and the US, and all the hard work done be Tye's Parents ( Mike & Rita Pratt ) and their Legacy Team Members.
The Ofc. Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund award of this NLETC session graduation ( there are 3 per year ) will be enhanced over the last one. Out of 44 students there are only 7 nominees. The recipient revived a Cash Award and the Special Solid Brass Tye Band which will bears the winners name and NLETC state emblem was placed on his wrist and a second one hangs from Ofc. Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund Plaque which is permanently installed at the Training Center. The remaining 6 nominees all received a personalized blue aluminum Tye Band and all 300 to 400 attendees ( family, friend and police officers ) received a special TyeCard© which Tye's father will explained in his address to the audience during the graduation ceremony.
Also, Special black Tye Bands was given to all NLETC staff members.

The TyeCard© was first introduced at the 165th graduation ceremony at The Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.

During his address to the audience and graduates Tye's Father, Mike Pratt, explained the TyeCard© and it's meaning and message to all.

" This day is your day not my son's day and I want to thank you for allowing us to be part of this great day. You can not know just how much this means to me unless you been to my son's Web Site or www.TyeBand.com and visited the page call The Story Behind The Tye Band . You see, this moment allows me to fulfill my son's last request when he said " Dad, are you going to remember me".

"The Ofc. Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund Award and this TyeCard© helps me keep my promise to Tye but I hope it does something else. That is to motive, strengthen, energize and encourage everyone who receives it."

"About a year after Tye was killed we set our sites on building The Ofc. Tye Pratt Scholarship Fund at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Omaha which is now in place. Then we went to work building The Ofc. Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund. Our goal was to Honor those who work so hard to serve and protect us, just like Tye did and my other son a police officer in Lincoln Nebraska is still doing."

"I have to tell you something... building The Ofc. Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund has not been easy. Much to our surprise we were faced and over came fierce resistance from some of the most unexpected people and places. It been a long hard road filled with many disappointments."

"Just as your journey will be filled with days of disappointments as you march forward on your noble cause."

The Bible says... "Whatever you set your hand to do with ALL you might" When you look at the this picture of Tye you'll know this is the way Tye lived his life.

"Something that helps me was a moment in time captured in a snap shot. This picture is on Tye Web Site under the section "Tye's Sport History".

"This picture is on the mirror in my bathroom, it the screen saver on my computer, it in my car and I carry a copy of it on my everywhere I go but most of all I carry it in my heart."

"As Tye's father held up a huge copy of the picture he explained how, in this race, Tye helped lead his team to victory."

He said: " I'll never forget what my mentor said to me early in my business courier... People only see how you finish a race but they never know what it took to get there."

"You probably can't see from where you are sitting but the picture clearly shows both of Tye's upper legs were wrapped as well as his foot and ankle. This is because Tye's had pulled not one but both his hamstring muscles and was recovering from a broken foot."

"Despite the advise of the doctor and his parents Tye had to run in this race because as he said " " I can't let my team down"".

This is the spirit of every Law Enforcement Officer I have even known.

When I'm out working with the various Tye Band programs and I face rejection or disappointment and want to give up - I stare at this picture of Tye and see the discipline and determination in his face and say... I can do this for you - I can do this.

So, I made what I call the TyeCard© in the hope it will help others as it does me.

On the back it reads...

1 Corinthians 9:24 - 27

" Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it! And everyone who competes for the prize, is temperate in all things. Now they that do it to obtain a perishable prize crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.
But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified "
2 Timothy 4:7

" I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the Faith. "

"You are all welcome to have one or more and when you tired, and feel beaten or wonder if it's all worth it and want to give up, I hope this card will Motivate - Energize - and Encourage you as it does me. So that you can say, everyday...

" I will Fight the good fight, I will finished the race, I will kept the Faith. "

First Tye Pratt memorial scholarship given at LETC graduation

As they do at each Law Enforcement Training Center graduation, those gathered to see their loved ones join law enforcement's ranks observed a moment of silence to honor fallen officers.

On Thursday, that moment was driven home when Mike and Rita Pratt presented one of the graduates with the first scholarship established in honor of their late son, Jason Tye Pratt.

Pratt was an eight-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department when he was shot during a foot pursuit in north Omaha on Sept. 11, 2003. He died eight days later.

"Tye was not great because of the way he left this world but because of the way he lived," Michael Pratt said. "Tye loved what he did -- probably for the same reason you've chosen your noble professions -- because he wanted to help people."

After Tye Pratt died, his family began selling custom-made wristbands in his honor and donated the proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club of Omaha. The first bands, which sell for $29.95 each, featured a diamond-etched photo of Tye and a written memorial on aircraft aluminum. Now a variety of photos, etched images and sayings are available.

The proceeds go to the Officer Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund at the training center. A $350.00 grant will be given to one student three times every year at each of the three sessions to help them purchase body armor or other necessary equipment.

The recipient from the 164th basic class was Travis King, a 43-year-old father of five who is restarting his law enforcement career in Fremont after serving with the Rollins, Wyo., Police Department. King's wife also suffers from medical problems, Pratt said as he presented the scholarship.

Pratt said the scholarship was offered through an application process and knew it was going to be tough to decide who should get the money. He said after reading all the applications, he was shocked by the graduates' nominations of King.

"It was kinda overwhelming," Pratt said.

He hadn't expected the men and women applying to do so for someone else but said he shouldn't have been surprised due to the unselfish nature of those who go into law enforcement.

In addition to the grant, the Pratt's presented King with a personalized Tye band featuring the Fremont Police Department's badge and the words "Thank you for your courage."

After the ceremony, King said he didn't know he would be receiving the grant and hadn't yet decided how he would spend the money.

The Pratt's also presented the training center staff with a plaque that features a photo of Tye Pratt and the slogan "These are the bands that tie us all together."

The plaque is to symbolize the first Tye bands, which were made of solid brass. On Thursday graduate Christifer Folkerts, who received a non-law certification, received one of the brass bands along with a $350.00 check from the fund.

The idea that their new professions could cost them their lives wasn't lost on the graduates. During his address to his fellow students, Jerry Esch of the Hastings Police Department, gave the instructors a plaque as a thank you for all their hard work.

"You've saved all our lives," he said. "It just hasn't happened yet."

A 30-year old Beatrice man received a $350 award from the Officer Tye Pratt Law Enforcement Fund today during graduation ceremonies at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island.

Chris Folkerts received the award named in the honor of Omaha Police Ofc. Jason "Tye" Pratt, who was slain in September of 2003 by a fugitive running from a traffic stop.

Pratt's father, Mike Pratt of Valley, NE made the presentation award. The award will be given to one graduate from each of the academy's three yearly training sessions.

Mike and Rita Pratt also made a special award of $350 to Travis King of Fremont, NE. King is a 43-year-old graduate of the academy who moved to Nebraska with his wife and 5 children after serving six years on the Rawlings, Wyo. Police force.

"Officer Kings story was one that really touched our hearts," Mike Pratt said. "We wanted to make a separate award from us, not the fund, to him".

I work at the Law Enforcement Training Center and I would like to thank you
for the "Tye Band." I have worked at the Training Center for 18 years and
have seen the extensive training and preparation each officer goes through
to become a part of the law enforcement profession. There is a vast
amount of pride attached to the title of police officer and it is not
achieved without a great deal of training, dedication and a love for the
profession. Although the duty to protect and serve was taken from your
son, may it give you and your family some peace of mind to know his goal to
keep the streets safe will be carried on by his fellow officers and that he
will be forever remembered by entire law enforcement profession.

Mr. Mike Pratt sr.

I am a member of the support staff at NLETC. I am honored to be a
recipient of a Tye Band. Thank you.

Obviously, I cannot know the anguish in your heart, but I can empathize
with you, as I have two sons who are active policemen - one at Omaha PD.
They are careful not to share too many incidents with their mother, but I
have limited knowledge of what goes on. I pray for their safety everyday
as well as for all police everywhere.

I will keep you and your wife in my prayers.

Thank you again for the Tye Band.
