Michael Pratt Sr. and Rita Pratt
Rita Pratt visits her son's grave at Omaha's Calvary Cemetery at least twice a week.
Despite the grief, the couple have tried to turn the tragedy of their son's death into something positive.
Using their personal savings,
the Pratts formed the Tye Band Co. and began selling wristbands in honor of their fallen son. Proceeds help fund programs at the Boys and Girls Clubs in north and south Omaha.
Michael Pratt Sr. hopes that with the couple's help, the organization can keep children on the right track and help end the street violence that claimed their son's life. - Kristin Zagurski

Father Keeps Officer's Legacy Alive
Tye Bands Will Support Boys, Girls Clubs
OMAHA, Neb. -- The family of Officer Jason "Tye" Pratt hopes to keep his legacy alive and help troubled teens at the same time.
Mike Pratt, Tye's father, has created the Tye Band, a bracelet with his son's image and badge number.
he proceeds go to Omaha's Boys and Girls Clubs that help children develop character and leadership skills.
Officer Pratt was killed in the line of duty Sept. 11, 2003. He was shot after he pulled over Albert Rucker, 21,
in a traffic stop. Pratt's partner shot Rucker, who had 140 previous run-ins with police.
For 10 months, Mike Pratt has been trying to figure out a proper way to keep his son's memory alive.
"I thought, what if we can get to the kids before they're mixed up, instead of buying another cruiser to pick 'em up
-- why not find a way to lift 'em up and change 'em," Mike Pratt said. 'It's what his whole life is made up of.
We'll try and keep his legacy going."
OfficerPratt.com tells the story of Tye Pratt. There are photos of him from baby to adult. It is also the place to order
the Tye Band and support the cause.
"What makes you great isn't how you go out in some spectacular way. It's the difference you make in people's lives.
He was always doing that so hopefully this will make a difference," Pratt said.

Vigil Marks Year Since Officer's Death
Pratt Family Gathers To Mourn
Pratt's parents, Mike and Rita, asked a sheriff's deputy to speak on their behalf.
"It is not important how we leave this world, but how we left it," said Sgt. Rich McShane, of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department. "Not by the way we died, but the way we lived. Tye shouldn't be remembered as an officer killed in the line of duty, but as one with the dream of making the world a better place."

Tye's Mother Weeps at Shooting Sight
An Omaha police officer was remembered Saturday, one year after he was fatally wounded.
Sgt. Jason "Tye" Pratt was shot in the head last September 11th at 33rd and Corby during the foot pursuit of a man who fled a traffic stop. The suspect, 21-year-old Albert Rucker, was shot and killed by another officer. The 30-year-old Pratt died eight days later. He left behind a wife and two young daughters.
Pratt's parents returned to the scene of the shooting Saturday. They came with a police escort, including some of the officers who were there on this night one year ago. Sgt. Kirk Kunze walked Pratt's parents through the fated moments. "Witnesses saw a flash of light, which would be the round." Pratt's father, Mike, came to the scene just two days later, while his son still fought for his life. His mother, Rita, decided now was her time. "For a year I struggled with it and I thought, I have to see where my son got shot, I just have to. As a mother I always felt I should have been here. I always took care of my kids, made sure they got well, and this time I couldn't."
Through their grief, both parents talked of their pride in their son, in the way he lived his life. "Everything he sat his hand to, he did with all his might," said Mike Pratt. "He did everything to the best of his ability, and even to his last breath." Rita Pratt said she will not return to the place where her son was shot. The Pratt family gathered at the cemetery afterwards.
