Off-duty police officer dies in Camden crash
An off-duty police officer died early this morning when his vehicle hit a tractor trailer in Mount Ephraim in Camden County, officials said, according to a report in the Courier-Post.
Thomas J. Soto, 27, was traveling north on the Black Horse Pike near White Avenue when his Chevrolet Tahoe crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Pathmark tractor-trailer at 4:41 a.m., officials said.
Soto had been a member of the Pennsauken Police Department since July 2006 and served on the town's school board.
"It's a tragic loss," Cheryl Link, president of the Pennsauken Board of Education, told the paper.
A relative of Soto's, Thomas A. Cruz-Soto, also was injured in the crash. He was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
Officer Soto graduated Pennsauken High School in 1998, worked as an Information Officer for Pennsauken Police Dept. for 2 years before becoming a Police Officer in 2006. He was a member of the FOP, Lodge # 3, the Pennsauken School Board for 5 years and the Journey Youth Program.
